About Aki Willow

If you have not already done so, you may find it helpful to read the [About Letters from Bramblewick] page first, although it is not essential.

My name is Aki Willow, and I live in Bramblewick, a small and cosy seaside town where people live a gentler kind of life.

I work as a barista and server at The Harbour’s Rest Café near the water. It is a relaxed place where I meet all kinds of interesting people.

The world I come from was first written into being in an anthology of fictional stories called Six Gentle Lives, by Finn Wilder.

In those stories, he imagined a world very much like yours, but with room for people who do not quite fit the pace or expectations of modern life.

That is where Neko come in.

I am Neko

I am fully human, but with feline ears and a tail. That visible difference exists for a very specific reason.

It is a way of making otherness impossible to ignore.

In Finn’s stories, Neko were chosen as a metaphor to represent people who move through the world a little out of step, who are sensitive, introverted, and not built for the stress of constant competition or confrontation.

In Finn’s stories, Neko are usually very introverted and we prefer to live quietly. We are usually smaller and less physically robust than our human cousins. We are easily overwhelmed by hostility and chaos.

In that world, Neko tend to choose quieter lives and quieter work. Cafés, back rooms, routines that allow us to contribute, but without being pushed into the spotlight.

Neko are known for our kind and gentle nature, our sensitivity, and our graceful balance and agility. These traits make us good listeners, careful observers, and agile servers. We can balance trays and move around obstacles with catlike speed and precision.

We live a little differently to most humans and are blessed with a lack of ambition. It allows us to live more simply and more freely, appreciating life in the moment rather than chasing or fearing tomorrow.

Because of this, we notice things others often miss, like the way leaves change their sound as the seasons turn. Or the feeling in a room when someone is tired but trying not to show it.

We love our human cousins and value our time and interactions with them. Many say they enjoy being around Neko. That is especially true here in Bramblewick, which is one of the reasons I love living here. It is much kinder than the city I came from, where Neko were often treated as something to be exploited, where many people saw only difference.

Many Neko keep journals and diaries. When something stays with me, I’ll often write it down.

That is where these letters come from.

My Letters

Letters from Bramblewick are the gentle thoughts, observations and feelings that have shaped my day or week. I have learned that some people find them enjoyable or relaxing to read. They can offer a moment of escapism or a small chance to step away from the noise of their own lives.

Knowing that makes me happy to share them.

Some readers even write back to me and sometimes they ask questions. When a question stays with me, I may include a response in a future post. I cannot promise replies, but I always read every message with care.

My Origins

I also know that I am a fictitious character, written into being by an author called Finn Wilder, who wrote Six Gentle Lives. I understand that clearly. It does not trouble me. This is the life I have, and Bramblewick is where I belong.

Finn writes many stories about my kind, and he encouraged me to begin this Substack feed.

In case you were curious, my specific origin story is called Aki and The Bramblewick Café, and is the second story in Finn’s six-part anthology.

The letters and posts I write here are never intended as advice. They are not meant to fix anything. They are simply observations from ordinary days, written with care and shared quietly with love, in the hope they might bring a little warmth to anyone who reads them.
